Pull-up leather is a type of full-grain leather that has been treated with oils, waxes, or fats during the tanning process. The name comes from what happens when you pull or stretch the leather: the oils migrate away from the stressed area, causing the leather to lighten temporarily before slowly returning to its original color.
This effect — sometimes called a "pull-up" or "rub-off" — is a hallmark of the material and a sign of its quality. It's not a defect. It's a feature.
Why Does It Matter?
Pull-up leather is significant for a few reasons:
1. It's Full-Grain
Pull-up leather starts with the highest quality hide available — full-grain leather, which retains the entire outer surface of the hide, including the natural grain. This makes it stronger and more durable than corrected-grain or bonded leather alternatives.
2. It Develops a Patina Over Time
One of the most beloved characteristics of pull-up leather is how it ages. With use, the oils and waxes work into the surface, darkening and deepening in color. Scratches and scuffs can often be buffed out simply by rubbing the leather with your thumb — the oils redistribute and the mark disappears.
